A good ready-made sauce always starts with tomatoes: Italian, harvested at optimal ripeness, and processed on the same day. It's the only way to achieve that full, natural red colour, which requires no added colours.
Second key element: fat. Extra virgin olive oil makes all the difference compared to generic vegetable oils. It should be clearly indicated on the label and appear among the first ingredients.
Third element: a short list. The shorter and more readable the ingredient list, the closer the sauce is to a homemade preparation. No preservatives, no flavour enhancers: just raw ingredients and cooking time.
